Drivers Benefits: Helping Black Car Drivers in New York
The Drivers Benefits app is designed to assist black car drivers in New York in accessing the benefits they deserve. With over 40,000 eligible drivers, this app offers free eye exam and glasses benefits, as well as the ability to call a doctor for free whenever needed. In case of accidents while on the job, eligible drivers can also be connected to workers' compensation coverage. These benefits are made possible through the support of The Black Car Fund, which has been collecting a surcharge on black car trips since 1999.
Additionally, the Drivers Benefits app provides access to other benefits offered by the Independent Drivers Guild. These include low-cost lawyers for drivers needing assistance with traffic tickets or Taxi & Limousine Commission violations, driver safety and wellness classes, and discounts on prescription drugs.
It's important to note that not all black car drivers are eligible for the free vision and telemedicine benefits. Eligibility is determined by averaging 85 hours per month of trips with a passenger in the car over three months. The app determines eligibility every three months, and qualifying drivers will be eligible for the following three months.
